Started in 2005 the “Community Arts initiative” was created as a regional outreach program to find ways of helping our local communities bring the arts into their area, by working with local school children, families, community organizations, institutions, and local government. The 1st project for the program was the “Centennial Celebration Mural” for the city of Toledo on the Central Oregon Coast. The mural was created by working with the History Center & Mayors office of Toledo to create the largest mosaic mural in the state of Oregon at over 96 feet in length and over 15 feet in height. Over 1,000 volunteers from the local community took part in the work to create the mural including children from all three schools in the city, elementary, middle, and high school. The Design for the mural was done using historical photos from the 100 year history of the city. Overall Design was done by staff artist Eric Sappington, Character Design was done by Laurie Brown our former Managing Director as well as a staff designer for OCCT/OCCCA. Mosaic Design, Artistic Design & Direction was done by Artistic Director & CEO Lawrence Adrian with help also from Dina Britton our Education Director along with other OCCT/OCCCA staff.
The mural was dedicated in November of 2005 after 7 months of design and work on the project it was supported by individual contributions, corporate support, and thousands of volunteer hours in the creation of this beautiful work of public art.
The second project for the program is the creation of another mosaic mural to be placed at the North Lincoln County Historical Museum in Lincoln City. Community work parties will take place in Lincoln City in the Spring of 2005. “Blue Night on Siletz Bay” is a 9’by 5’ mural design based on historical photos from the museum’s collection. The Community Arts Initiative was supported by a seed grant from the Lincoln County Cultural Coalition supported by the Oregon Cultural Trust, support for projects in 2006-2007 was also supported by the Confederated Tribes of the Siletz Indians of Oregon and their Charitable Contribution Fund.
The Theatre and Art Center have additional plans for future projects, if your Community, Town, or Organization wants to build a Community Art Project for your area, please contact staff for more information.
