Presented in black light & special lighting, all of the puppets for the pageant are painted with florescent paint which allows them to glow under the shows lighting. When possible we ask students to wear dark clothing this allows the brightly painted puppets as see in these photos. to standout from the students in the show. By the use of this effect the Ocean Realm comes alive for the audience & participants.
The theatre brings over 150 puppets to the school like Jelly Fish, Dolphin, Shark, Sea Turtles, and of course our humpback Whale puppet. K-3 or K-4 students make the tropical fish puppets that are used by them in the show. Depending on your school usually the top 2 grades operate the large puppets and younger students become schools of fish. Teachers are used as leaders for the younger students, and rehearsals are run like movement games in order to teach each class to work as a team to avoid predators and other fish.
This process allows the audience to view from 400 to as many as 700 puppets at one time depending on the size of the school, creating a wonderful effect. As an Inter-Arts program “Spirits” blends the visual arts with the performing arts and integrates Marine Science and Conservation Education.
